Last year I took a trip to Boston and visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History. They had a huge bug collection, so I took loads of photos to use as reference in future artworks. Painting insects is fun, and challenging. The creepy-crawly subject matter provides something different from the cute and cuddly that I often get commissioned to paint. Gotta keep things interesting! The carpenter bee drew me in because the shape was so round, and it was quite large.
This piece was painted with acryla-gouache on a 3/4″ thick cradled panel. This panel is ready-to-hang with a wire installed. No need for a frame, unless you want to add one. Finally, the painting was finished with a UV-protectant varnish.
