Spoonflower Challenge – A Trip to the Beach

  • by

I forgot to publicize my last challenge entry, but it wasn’t a favorite of mine. I had a feeling it wouldn’t do well and it didn’t. I didn’t do a great job of following the prompt and went in a different direction, making something that was more conceptual and less marketable.

The second challenge for March is a fun one though. A Trip to the Beach.

For this one I pulled inspiration from some photos I took from a day trip to Wells, Maine a few years ago. There were tons of seagulls around. I did make a simple pattern of just sea gulls chilling. It’s cute but maybe a little too basic. So I embellished each bird with some beachy items like sunscreen, bucket hats, beach balls, and snorkel gear along with an obligatory crab.

The final result is pretty minimal, but I like it. It might be my least chaotic design! I could see it being used in a kids bedroom at a beach house for wallpaper or bedding. Or a shower curtain in this print would be fun! Sea gulls and crabs were a common theme in other designers creations.

Voting for this theme is open and ends March 26th.

When I design I start off with a pretty big file. I’m getting in the habit of reproducing the designs in smaller scales for apparel and quilting fabric. Oversized prints are great for wallpaper, upholstery and can be exciting and bold when used on apparel. The pillow is an example of the mid-range design and the fabric below shows a tiny scale.

If you need this design for your beach house you can find all of the scales here.
